Yes, it will have a crank position sensor, and a identifier on the plug wires. The crank will be found on the right side of the motor as you sit in the car, or for you the driver's side.

SOURCE: bmw 316i E36. To set the timing you should turn the No.1 piston to TDC, then turn the cam to where both valves on No.1 are close. The timing mark on the sproket should now be in line with the mark on the cilinder head. With No. 1 still on TDC fit the chain.
sw4LaW. If the timing belt alignment is off the mark buy more than 3 teeth, the valves and pistons may have contact. Timing belt alignment marks DOHC Align the timing marks on the belt with the marks on the sprockets in the numerical order shown in the illustration. Install the lower right idler pulley with the mounting bolt. Tighten 29 ft-lb (39 Nm).
The car died on me yesterday and I have a feeling the the timing belt has snapped, I know most have chains but some of the early beemers still had belts as mine is a 91 model it's just on the crossover from the e30 model from what I believe. Number one's cylinder valve lobes should be pointed up at ten to two or thereabouts. (no1 cyl. closed on compression). The square on the front of the camshaft casting with the two smooth sides should be pointing up in line with the centre point of the front of the engine. i.e. one smooth side on the left and the other on the right!.
The TDC timing mark is on the lower timing cover, and it does point the timing mark on the hub/balancer to the passenger bank intake cam. You will find another mark on the hub, for approximately 43 degrees advanced position. When lined up with this mark the crank is down a bit for maximum valve clearance when needed.
